Non-Formal Training Team in Egypt:
Crossing Borders
Our Non-Formal Training (NFT) team continues responding to God’s call to serve wherever He opens doors. Across the region, they accompany people as they explore questions about themselves and process trauma. Through the trainings they offer and by God’s grace, participants become more Christ-like and better equipped to serve their communities.
Most recently, the NFT team traveled to Egypt to lead a training workshop for 13 strategic leaders coming from the Arabian Gulf, including eight men and five women. The training, facilitated by Bassem Melki, Director of Peacemaking and NFT, focused on interpersonal reconciliation and peacemaking. Each day included worship, prayer, and discussions. Through guided reflection, participants explored areas of their lives that needed reconciliation, examined personal struggles, and reflected on how past experiences continue to shape their present realities.
Reem El Khoury, Peacemaking and Non-Formal Training Coordinator, journeyed with the women throughout the conference, reflecting on Ephesians 6, with particular focus on the Armor of God. Discussions brought cultural realities to the surface, including the complex experiences of women, who are often marginalized while simultaneously carrying significant responsibilities within their families and communities. Moreover, conversations about forgiveness became particularly meaningful. One participant shared the painful story of family members who had been killed during a conflict in the Arabian Gulf. She spoke openly about her struggle to forgive those responsible for the deaths of her loved ones. She also shared how another relative suffered a stroke after witnessing his wife’s death. Reem was able to spend time praying with her and walking alongside her as she began to process years of grief and unresolved pain.
Meanwhile, Abed El Kareem Zien El Dien, ABTS faculty member, accompanied the men in reflecting on the book of Ephesians. Together, they explored the importance of the Church as one body and the challenges that can divide believers, and how Jesus has reconciled them to God. They also reflected on how they are called to live out this reconciliation in unity despite their differences.
Participants expressed deep appreciation for the training and its impact on their lives. One participant shared, “I have attended many training workshops, but this time I felt that every single topic related directly to my life. It was so personal”. Another commented, “I loved the workshop's approach, the focus on reconciliation, and the excellent organization”. Several participants noted how quickly the days passed because of their engagement and enjoyment, and one testified, “I was deeply touched, and the training exceeded my expectations.”
Ephesians 6:15 “And with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace” reminds us that we are called to be ready and equipped to serve His Church. We pray that driven by this calling and carried by God’s hand, our NFT team continues to cross borders to serve others, encouraging their growth and healing.
