Educational Journeys of Graduating Students

As the academic year draws to a close, we reflect with some of our graduating students on their journeys of learning. These journeys have been more than an academic experience; they have been a profound spiritual quest. Each student has, in rigorous study, deepened their understanding of Scripture, and in prayerful reflections, discerned their call to serve the Lord Jesus Christ. Less than two weeks from now, we expect more than 30 students to graduate from various formal programs at ABTS, all of whom are already active in serving the Arabic-speaking church. May the few accounts we share be a testament to God’s work and love for our wounded world.

Haroun

Haroun - Sudanese | Bachelor of Theology

My studies at ABTS have been a turning point in my life. Despite the struggles and challenges I faced, by God’s grace, I developed new theological skills, discovered new insights, and underwent significant personal growth. I saw new ways where God was confirming His invitation for me into ministry, and I also experienced His love for me even during a time of war. My education helped me organize my thoughts and social interactions as well as improve my preaching style. I gained a healthy theological foundation and developed strategic thinking to reach a vision that serves the church. Additionally, my studies increased my self-awareness and my cultural awareness. This helped me convey the Scripture smoothly, particularly when meeting and approaching people who do not know Jesus yet.

My journey is highlighted by the profound development and growth of my spiritual and intellectual life. The in-depth study of the Bible, particularly analyzing texts in Hebrew and Greek, was a key blessing. It deepened my understanding of God's Word to present the Gospel with greater accuracy. Developing leadership and service skills was another crucial aspect of my studies. Also, group management and effective communication have prepared me for future real-life challenges in ministry and in how I present the Lord Jesus. The theological understanding that I gained will enable me to interpret the Bible in more profound ways, while the leadership skills that I acquired will guide me in leading home-church groups more effectively. The reason behind my approach toward the teaching of the Gospel can be summarized by the two verses from 2 Timothy 1:12 and Philippians 2:5.

Michel - Yemeni | Bachelor of Theology

The past five years have been a profound journey of personal formation, where God sought to refine us into better individuals. This period has been a spiritual feast, nourishing my soul and bringing me joy and peace. It allowed me to encounter the love of God and understand the meaning of living eternal life in Him.

As my studies progressed, my certainty grew that God had chosen me for His service, and I witnessed how my time at the seminary was shaping me. I am no longer the person I was five years ago. My perspective on myself, God, and life in general, has undergone a radical transformation.

Today, life holds more meaning and beauty, and I am confident that God will continue to use me to serve His church and my Yemeni community.

2 Timothy 1:12

“That is why I am suffering as I am. Yet this is no cause for shame, because I know whom I have believed, and am convinced that he is able to guard what I have entrusted to him until that day.”

Philippians 2:5

“In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus.”

Zineb

Zineb - Moroccan | Bachelor of Theology

The most significant moments in my academic journey were during the preparatory phase, when we conducted a broad and systematic survey of the Bible and gained proper interpretation skills. This phase was not easy, but it was the beginning of a journey that lasted several years, and I was very happy with it. My studies at the seminary helped change not only how I engage with the Bible but also how I interact with those I serve and work with. Previously, I was limited to single-denominational thinking, but now I understand others better and how they think. I realize that just as my faith is rooted in the Bible, so is theirs. My perspective on and approach to others have evolved. In my current outreach and media ministry, through the programs that I prepare and present, I strive to convey the message simply and clearly to everyone, especially to non-Christians.
Anthony

Anthony - Lebanese | Bachelor of Theology

The modules about Leadership and The Missional Church, with all the topics discussed such as the role of a trusted steward, made a significant turning point in my life. It was a qualitative shift, where I learned a lot about service and how to interact with different types and personalities. Hearing and reading stories about servants of God, especially in The Missional Church module, helped me learn even more. Hudson Taylor, a missionary to China, inspired me with his love for service. His dedication and commitment to following the Lord taught me so much about patience, integrity, courage, and boldness. This inspiration led my wife and me to start a ministry with devoted followers of the Lord in Northern Lebanon. Seeing their love for the Lord, their eagerness to seek Him, and their dedication to serving Him has been a blessing and a beautiful testament.
Najeeb

Najeeb - Syrian | Bachelor of Theology

The journey at ABTS filled my heart with gratitude and inspired me to persist on my educational path. With patience and a deep love for service and collaboration with fellow believers, the encouragement and support I've received have been invaluable. The bachelor program has propelled me forward, helping me to stay true to the course and continue to seek to fulfill the will of the Lord in my life. The residency part was exceptional, allowing the students, staff, and faculty to connect, creating a community reminiscent of the early church. Sharing experiences deepened my empathy toward others and revealed to me how God works in many lives. My studies provided a solid academic foundation for balanced biblical knowledge that is crucial for my present and future ministry. The program shaped my personal, psychological, and spiritual growth, aligning with Christ’s teaching in Matthew 5:16. This emphasis on serving through word and deed is essential for impactful service in God’s kingdom.

Matthew 5:16

“In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”

Stephanie

Stephanie – Lebanese | Bachelor of Theology

Every course at ABTS was beneficial in terms of how I behave and how I teach others. The Leadership module impacted me directly because it taught me how to lead, which is one of the most challenging responsibilities. It was very enriching. Also, the counselling course had a significant effect and impression on my marriage. In terms of culture and intellectual development, applying what we learned to the ministry that my husband and I are involved in, is not easy. However, I have learned critical thinking skills and fundamental theological principles that help me be a true servant leader for the Lord without being authoritarian. As we study and learn, we grow in service and have a greater impact on the community and those around us. Our growth reflects a thirst for the right message. A person who keeps their knowledge to themselves is limited, but a person who seeks to grow and learn can be a better help to others.

Karim - Lebanese | Bachelor of Theology

The transition from obtaining my Certificate in Ministry several years ago to then earning my Bachelor of Theology degree has been a significant part of my journey. During this time, I focused on deepening my understanding of God, improving my relationship with Him, and growing closer to Him. Since I serve in my church and community proclaiming the name of Jesus and the message of salvation, it was essential for me to study, delve deeper, think more, and use the material learned at ABTS as tools for service. I have used this material in mentoring the youth I lead, participating in the church planting program, and studying holiness from John Wesley's book. It also helped me as I am serving in home groups, researching theological topics, preaching, and doing other church planting activities.

The most rewarding aspect of my journey has been the deep connections I've built with my fellow cohort members, teachers, and faculty at ABTS, all of whom have nurtured a vibrant sense of community within the kingdom of God. Meeting diverse Muslim and Christian neighbors in the MENA region has deepened my identity as a Christ-follower and enhanced how I love and relate to my fellow Muslims, Christian friends, and other neighbors. The diverse MRel cohort and supportive faculty have been invaluable to my studies. The MRel program at ABTS has profoundly impacted my understanding of God’s love for the world. It has enriched my insights into my work context and enhanced my ability to serve the Lord Jesus. The academic excellence I’ve gained in anthropological, historical, economic, political, theological, and missiological studies of the MENA region is truly enriching. The study has increased my knowledge and strengthened my love and understanding of relationships, especially with friends from the MENA region who migrated to New Zealand.Since I serve in my church and community proclaiming the name of Jesus and the message of salvation, it was essential for me to study, delve deeper, think more, and use the material learned at ABTS as tools for service. I have used this material in mentoring the youth I lead, participating in the church planting program, and studying holiness from John Wesley's book. It is such a delight to witness God’s work in shaping these remarkable leaders through their studies. As they step into the future, we praise God for them, we celebrate their perseverance and openness to God’s guidance and word in shaping them. We earnestly pray for them, trusting that they will seek God’s will and shine Christ’s light where He leads them.
